RICHMOND, Va. — What began as a day of remembrance ended in tragedy on Wednesday afternoon when 36-year-old Kwaivon Dejesus was shot and killed outside Fifth Baptist Church on West Cary Street in Richmond.

According to the Richmond Police Department, officers were called to the 1400 block of West Cary Street around 4:29 p.m. on October 29, 2025, for reports of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Dejesus suffering from a gunshot wound outside the church, where a funeral had just taken place. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was transported to a local hospital and pronounced deceased shortly after.

Investigators say the shooting followed a confrontation between Dejesus and another man during a post-funeral family gathering. What should have been a solemn time of grief and unity instead turned into a moment of unimaginable loss and heartbreak.

Family members and friends described Dejesus as a kind-hearted man whose smile could light up a room — someone who cared deeply for his loved ones. His death has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him, and the community now mourns a life taken far too soon.

The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of death. Detectives are continuing to investigate and ask anyone with information to contact Detective B. Neifield at (804) 646-3246 or Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the P3 Tips app.

As candles are lit and prayers are offered, Richmond grieves the senseless loss of Kwaivon Dejesus — a life cut short on a day meant to honor the memory of another.
