With heavy hearts and profound sadness, the University of Arizona community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Sophia Troetel and Josiah Santos, two bright and beloved students whose lives were tragically cut short in a hit-and-run crash near 2nd Street and Euclid Avenue late Thursday night. Another student, Katya Castillo-Mendoza, was seriously injured and remains hospitalized as she fights to recover.

According to the Tucson Police Department, the crash occurred around 11 p.m. when a vehicle struck the three students before fleeing the scene. Authorities later confirmed that the 19-year-old driver suspected in the collision has been detained.

In an emotional statement, a University of Arizona spokesperson shared,

“Our community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Sophia Troetel and Josiah Santos and the serious injury of Katya Castillo-Mendoza. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and everyone grieving this devastating loss. The university stands in support of the injured student and her loved ones. Counseling and support services are being made available to all students, faculty, and staff affected by this tragedy.”

Sophia and Josiah were remembered as kind, motivated, and full of life, embodying the true spirit of the university. Friends and classmates describe them as compassionate, talented, and always willing to help others—young people whose laughter and warmth brought light to everyone around them.
