A heartbreaking tragedy has struck the St. Augustine’s College community following the death of 16-year-old Bahamian student Madeline Thompson, who reportedly fell from the 27th floor of a high-rise hotel in Panama City while attending the FIRST Global Robotics Challenge.
The incident occurred around 6:05 a.m. on Friday, according to Panamanian news outlet El Siglo. Authorities said Madeline fell from the 27th floor to the 12th, landing in the hotel’s social area near the pool. At the time of the incident, she was reportedly sharing a room with two classmates.
Local authorities in Panama have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
St. Augustine’s College confirmed the loss in a statement, expressing profound sorrow:
“It is with the deepest sorrow and heavy hearts that St. Augustine’s College confirms the tragic passing of one of our students in Panama City. The loss is felt profoundly by our entire school family. Our thoughts, prayers, and unwavering support are with the student’s family, loved ones, classmates, teachers, and all who are grieving during this unimaginable time.”
The school also noted that its delegation to Panama was accompanied by a parent, a chaperone, the principal, and faculty members, and that they are cooperating closely with Panamanian authorities while offering support to all affected.
St. Joseph’s Parish Council and Pastoral Team later identified the victim as Madeline Thompson, describing her as a “cherished member of our parish family” who was deeply devoted to serving others.
“Her kind heart, gentle spirit, and willingness to help others reflected the love of Christ in all she did,” the parish wrote. “We join her parents, Jerome and Shenique Thompson, her loved ones, and the entire St. Augustine’s College community in mourning this heartbreaking loss.”
Madeline, who had recently celebrated her 16th birthday on September 26, was known for her compassion, faith, and dedication to service—volunteering weekly at St. Joseph’s Soup Kitchen.
Her passing has sent shockwaves throughout the Bahamas and beyond, as friends, classmates, and community members remember a bright, talented young woman whose potential was limitless and whose kindness touched many lives.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
