Rochester, NY — Authorities have identified the woman tragically killed by a stray bullet during an early morning shooting in Rochester’s northeast side. The victim has been named as 31-year-old Kitana Kendrick, a beloved resident of the city whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence.

According to Capt. Frank Umbrino of the Rochester Police Department (RPD), the shooting occurred around 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, November 2, near Pulaski Park on Gothic Street. Officers responded after receiving reports of gunfire in the area. Upon arrival, they found Kendrick lying in the street with a serious injury to her upper body.

Emergency personnel rushed her to Strong Memorial Hospital, but despite medical efforts, she was later pronounced dead.

Investigators believe Kendrick was struck unintentionally by a stray bullet during a dispute among a group of individuals nearby. Captain Umbrino explained that while Kendrick was present at the scene, she was not the intended target. None of the people involved in the argument lived on Gothic Street, suggesting that the confrontation began elsewhere before moving into the neighborhood.

The RPD Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation and is actively working to identify those responsible. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage, gathering physical evidence, and interviewing witnesses. So far, no arrests have been made and no charges filed.

Authorities are urging anyone with information, videos, or photos related to the shooting to come forward. Tips can be shared by calling 911, contacting the RPD Major Crimes Unit at (585) 428-7157, reaching Crime Stoppers at (585) 423-9300, or emailing MajorCrimes@cityofrochester.gov. Tips submitted through Crime Stoppers may remain anonymous.

In a statement, police officials extended their deepest condolences to the family of Kitana Kendrick, vowing to pursue justice and bring closure to those affected by her loss.

The tragedy has deeply shaken the Rochester community, sparking renewed calls for peace and accountability. Community leaders and residents have spoken out, emphasizing the urgent need for conflict resolution, open communication, and nonviolent problem-solving to prevent such devastating outcomes.

Local advocacy organizations are offering support to Kendrick’s family and using this tragedy to highlight the ongoing issue of gun violence in the city. Many stress that meaningful change will require collective effort — from law enforcement, community groups, and residents alike — to create safer neighborhoods and give young people better paths forward.

As investigators continue their work, the memory of Kitana Kendrick stands as a painful reminder of how quickly violence can claim innocent lives. Her family and friends remember her as a kind, warm, and loving woman who deserved far more time than she was given.

May her memory live on as the community seeks peace, healing, and justice in her name.
