RALEIGH, N.C. — Heartbreak strikes the North Carolina State University community as 41-year-old Dr. Natalia Duque-Wilckens, an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, has tragically died after being struck by a car while walking in Raleigh on Tuesday evening.

According to the Raleigh Police Department, the crash occurred around 6:11 p.m. at the intersection of Pogue Street and Clark Avenue. Officers responding to the scene found Dr. Duque-Wilckens suffering from severe injuries after being hit by a vehicle while walking in the crosswalk. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries a short time later.

Authorities identified the driver as 19-year-old Jack Etheridge, who remained at the scene and cooperated with police. He was not injured and has since been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

The tragic loss of Dr. Duque-Wilckens has left colleagues, students, and friends in deep mourning.
