The city of Springfield is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 22-year-old Jayvon Bankhead, who tragically passed away following a shooting on East Washington Street early Friday morning.

Jayvon’s life was taken far too soon, leaving behind a family, circle of friends, and community who are struggling to come to terms with the sudden and devastating loss. Described by those who knew him as kind-hearted, full of potential, and deeply loved, Jayvon touched the lives of many through his warmth, loyalty, and uplifting spirit.
Emergency responders were called to the 400 block of East Washington Street on November 1, where Jayvon was found with a life-threatening gunshot injury. He was rushed to Springfield Memorial Hospital, but despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced deceased at 3:52 a.m. An autopsy later confirmed his passing was the result of a single gunshot wound.
As the Springfield Police Department and the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office continue their investigation, the community has come together in sorrow and remembrance.
