In Loving Memory of Jalin Willyard
ALVA, Okla. — The community of Alva is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 26-year-old Jalin Willyard, who was tragically killed during a welfare check early Monday morning. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting that took place near North Second and Mill Street shortly after midnight.
According to authorities, Woods County Sheriff’s deputies and Alva Police officers were responding to a call from Jalin’s mother, Rebekah Cook, who had reached out to 911 out of concern for her son’s mental health.
“He was just having some depression, and what else do you do as a mom?” Cook said tearfully. “I could tell he was struggling.”
Investigators say the situation escalated when Jalin allegedly pointed a firearm at officers, prompting them to open fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or deputies were injured. However, Jalin’s family strongly disputes that he posed any threat to law enforcement.
“Ultimately there should be no reason why stuff turns out like this,” said his fiancée, Kyra Prophet. “In the end, you should be able to de-escalate the situation without violence. He was a father — he wasn’t a violent person.”
Jalin’s death has left his loved ones reeling with grief and unanswered questions. His mother expressed deep sorrow and guilt, wondering if things could have gone differently.
“I keep telling myself, what if I didn’t call? Maybe he’d still be here,” Cook said. “But then again, what if I didn’t call and we could have helped him? I just don’t understand how a welfare check turns into a shooting.”
Those who knew Jalin describe him as compassionate, hard-working, and full of life.
“He’s a good kid. He’s never been in trouble,” Cook shared. “He would give you the shirt off his back.”
Jalin was an ordained minister, a volunteer firefighter, and was working toward becoming a licensed electrician and EMT. Above all, he was a devoted father, a loving fiancé, and a cherished son and friend.
“He’s going to be dearly missed,” Prophet said. “His kids are going to miss having him there for all the important milestones and birthdays.”
The OSBI continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, as the community calls for answers and healing.
A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with funeral expenses and to support Jalin’s children during this difficult time.
A kindhearted soul, a devoted father, and a man who gave so much to others.
May his light continue to shine through the lives he touched, and may his family find peace in the love that surrounds them.
