EL DORADO, Kan. — A former Kansas police chief is facing a staggering 34 criminal charges following a disturbing investigation into child exploitation crimes. Authorities say Joel Womochil, the former Burns Police Chief, was arrested after investigators uncovered evidence that he used electronic devices to exploit children and trade illegal materials online.

According to the El Dorado Police Department, Womochil has been charged with 24 counts of sexual exploitation of a child and 10 counts of aggravated internet trading of child pornography. The investigation began when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) alerted local authorities to possible criminal activity linked to Womochil.

Investigators quickly gathered evidence confirming the allegations. Shortly before his arrest, Womochil resigned as Burns Police Chief, and the Burns City Council held a special meeting to determine his future involvement with the city. During that meeting, the council entered an executive session to discuss the situation privately.

Soon after, law enforcement officers took Womochil into custody without incident. Officials say the crimes were carried out using digital platforms, and forensic experts are continuing to analyze seized electronic devices for additional evidence.

In a statement, police officials expressed outrage and disappointment that someone entrusted with public safety could betray that responsibility in such a horrific way. “This case is deeply troubling,” said a department spokesperson. “Our top priority is protecting the most vulnerable—our children—and ensuring that anyone who exploits them faces justice, regardless of their position or title.”

Womochil remains in custody as the investigation continues. Prosecutors say additional charges could be filed as authorities review more electronic evidence connected to the case.
