El Reno, OK — The El Reno community and law enforcement family are mourning the loss of Sergeant Thomas Duran, who tragically succumbed to injuries sustained in a hit-and-run crash while conducting a traffic stop early Saturday morning.
According to investigators, the incident occurred shortly before 2:00 a.m. on Watts Street near Wilson Street. Sergeant Duran had been flagged down by a pedestrian and was speaking with the individual on the roadside when a passing vehicle struck him and fled the scene. The pedestrian immediately moved Sergeant Duran to safety and called for help.
Sergeant Duran was airlifted to the University of Oklahoma Health Center, where he later passed away from his injuries. In a final act of service and compassion, his organs were donated to help save the lives of others—continuing the legacy of dedication and selflessness that defined his career.
The driver involved in the hit-and-run was arrested the following day and charged with failure to stop at an accident resulting in great bodily injury and assault and battery with a deadly weapon.
Sergeant Duran served with the El Reno Police Department for 14 years, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues and community. Before joining the department, he also served with the Enid Police Department and worked as a detention officer with the Edmond Police Department.
He is survived by his loving wife and children, who remember him not only as a dedicated officer but as a devoted husband, father, and friend.
The El Reno Police Department released a statement honoring his service, saying, “Sergeant Duran embodied the true spirit of law enforcement—selfless, compassionate, and committed to protecting others. His loss is deeply felt by all who had the honor of knowing him.”
