SALUDA COUNTY, S.C. — Deep sadness has fallen over Batesburg and surrounding communities following the tragic death of 35-year-old Rakeem West, who passed away on October 29, 2025, from injuries sustained in a horrific crash earlier this week in Saluda County.
According to authorities, Rakeem was driving a 2005 Honda Accord along U.S. Highway 178 near Prater Road on October 27 when his car collided with another vehicle, a 2022 Chevrolet Traverse. Emergency crews rushed to the scene and transported Rakeem to Prisma Health Richland, where he fought bravely for two days before succumbing to his injuries.
The collision also claimed the life of 76-year-old Shirley Fincher of Saluda, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The South Carolina Highway Patrol and Saluda County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
For those who knew Rakeem, the news has been heartbreaking. Family members, friends, and coworkers describe him as a man full of life, joy, and compassion — someone who never hesitated to lend a hand or share a smile. His laughter was contagious, his heart was pure, and his presence could brighten even the darkest day.
