It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that the Sunshine Coast community mourns the tragic loss of Finley Bone, a vibrant 21-year-old whose life was cut short in a rare and devastating lightning strike on Thursday afternoon.

Finley was at the Cooroy Sporting Complex, practicing goal kicking with her partner, when a bolt of lightning struck without warning. Paramedics rushed to the scene and transported her to Nambour Hospital in critical condition. Despite their best efforts, Finley passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Her mother, Donna Markert, said the family remains in disbelief. “There was no rain, no sign this could happen. Finley was 21 and had her life taken away in a minute,” she said, describing her daughter as “a beautiful, kind, and caring young woman taken in the prime of her life.”

Finley was a passionate athlete who played for the Noosa Lions FQPL3 Women’s Team and also dedicated her time to coaching the Under-12/13 girls. Her teammates and young players adored her for her warmth, encouragement, and leadership both on and off the field.

The Noosa Lions Football Club said in a statement, “We are devastated by the loss of Finley. She was not only a talented player but a cherished coach and friend. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her parents, Paul and Donna, and to all of Finley’s family and friends.”

Football Queensland and Cooroora United Football Club also expressed their condolences and have temporarily suspended all football activities to give the community time to grieve.

Finley’s death is a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile life can be. Her love for sport, her bright smile, and her caring nature will be remembered forever.

Rest in peace, Finley  your light will continue to shine in every heart you touched.
