Clarkston, GA — The Clarkston community is mourning the tragic and heartbreaking loss of Gary Matthews, a 31-year-old man whose life was cut short early Saturday morning in a shooting outside an adult entertainment club on Brockett Road near U.S. 78. What was meant to be a night of celebration for his birthday turned into an unimaginable tragedy.
According to Clarkston police, officers responded to the scene around 3:55 a.m. after reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found Gary unresponsive in the parking lot. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man was also found critically injured and rushed to the hospital in grave condition.
Investigators say Gary and three others were sitting inside a vehicle when two men stepped out of a Jeep and opened fire. Officers tried to pursue the suspects as they fled the scene, but they escaped. The Jeep was later discovered abandoned.
Gary Matthews, a resident of Lithonia, was described by friends and family as a loving son, brother, and friend—someone full of life, laughter, and loyalty. Those who knew him say he had a warm heart and an easy smile, the kind of person who could make anyone feel seen and appreciated. He had been excited to celebrate another year surrounded by people who cared for him, unaware that the night would end in heartbreak.
The news of his death has left his loved ones shattered. “Gary didn’t deserve this,” one close friend shared. “He was celebrating life, and now we’re mourning his.”
The DeKalb County Police Department assisted at the scene, but the case is being handled by Clarkston police, who continue to search for the suspects and a motive. No arrests have yet been made.
