Houston Woman Mourns Estranged Husband After Fiery Wrong-Way Crash Claims His Life

HOUSTON — The Houston community is mourning the loss of Jamar Champ, 38, who died in a tragic wrong-way crash on the Katy Freeway early Tuesday morning. Champ was driving a Tesla Cybertruck near the Washington/Westcott exit when a BMW traveling the wrong way collided head-on with his vehicle, causing the BMW to burst into flames and sending Champ’s truck into a nearby semi. Authorities confirmed that both drivers died from the crash.
Champ’s sudden death has left his loved ones devastated. His estranged wife, entrepreneur Masika Kalysha, took to her X account to share her heartbreak, asking for prayers for herself and their children. “God woke me up at 2:00 a.m.… I couldn’t sleep. I didn’t know why. Jesus Christ I just received the worse news of my life. Pray for me and my kids please,” Kalysha wrote.
Friends and family remember Champ as a devoted father and a caring friend, whose presence brought light to those around him. The loss is felt not only by his immediate family but by the broader Houston community, many of whom knew him for his warmth and kindness.
Police reports indicate the BMW driver entered the eastbound lanes of I-10 heading west despite multiple “Do Not Enter” and “Wrong Way” signs. Investigators believe the BMW struck the Cybertruck before crashing into a semi. An autopsy will determine whether impairment played a role in the incident.
Residents in the area have long expressed concern about wrong-way drivers, citing recurring near-misses in the Washington/Westcott vicinity. Houston authorities and TxDOT have installed warning signs and red reflectors, yet these dangerous accidents persist.
As the Champ family mourns, friends and supporters are rallying around Masika Kalysha and their children, offering prayers and comfort during this unimaginably painful time. The community continues to grieve the loss of a life so abruptly and tragically taken, and the memory of Jamar Champ will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
