Downing Resident Dies in Woodbury Crash, Community Mourns
WOODBURY, Minn. — The Downing, Wisconsin, community is grieving after 83-year-old Thomas Samuel Amsbaugh tragically died in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 94 Monday afternoon. The accident occurred around 2:14 p.m. just west of Manning Avenue, involving a Chevrolet Corvette and a Toyota Corolla.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the Corvette’s driver, 76-year-old Peter Henry Jungenberg of Menomonie, Wisconsin, lost control, causing the car to spin out and roll into the south ditch. The Corolla also left the roadway and came to a stop nearby. Emergency crews transported both men to Regions Hospital, where Amsbaugh succumbed to his injuries. Jungenberg sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while the Corolla’s 30-year-old driver from North Saint Paul was unharmed. Authorities confirmed all occupants were wearing seat belts and that alcohol was not involved. The crash occurred on dry pavement and remains under investigation.
Family and friends of Amsbaugh describe him as a warm, kind-hearted man who brought joy to those around him. “He always had a story to tell and a smile for everyone,” a relative said. “This loss is devastating. He was deeply loved, and our hearts ache for his family.”
The crash scene brought a swift response from Woodbury Police and Fire, as well as officers from Cottage Grove and Oakdale, who worked together to assist the victims. Neighbors say the accident shocked the community, leaving many reflecting on the fragility of life and the suddenness with which tragedy can strike.
As Downing residents and the broader community mourn Amsbaugh’s passing, thoughts remain with his loved ones during this difficult time. The Minnesota State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, while friends, family, and neighbors honor the memory of a man whose life was taken far too soon.
