ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The close-knit community of Holley, New York, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 69-year-old Mark Morreall, who tragically lost his life following a multi-vehicle crash and fire inside the parking garage of Rochester General Hospital.
According to the Rochester Police Department (RPD), the incident occurred on the second floor of the hospital’s Portland Avenue garage. Investigators say Morreall’s vehicle struck six parked cars before coming to a stop and catching fire. By the time emergency responders arrived, the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames.
Despite the rapid and courageous efforts of six fire companies and 24 firefighters, led by Lieutenant Jackie Sierra of the Rochester Fire Department, the blaze proved fatal. When responders were finally able to approach the vehicle, Morreall was found deceased inside.
Authorities report that nine vehicles in total were damaged, but the preliminary investigation determined that the crash was accidental, with no criminal involvement suspected. Officials believe a medical event may have contributed to the tragedy.
Captain George Bello with RPD stated, “Our detectives from the arson task force are working to understand exactly what happened and to bring closure to the family of this gentleman. We’re deeply saddened by this loss.”
Structural engineers have confirmed the garage remains stable, though out of caution, parts of the second floor will remain temporarily closed. Rochester General Hospital continues to operate normally, and visitors are being asked to use the Carter Street Garage.
Back in Holley, the news of Morreall’s passing has left a deep void. Friends and neighbors remember him as a kind, hardworking man with a warm smile and generous spirit. His loss has touched many in the small town he called home.
As investigators continue to piece together what happened, the Holley community unites in grief — remembering Mark not for the tragedy that took his life, but for the kindness, laughter, and love he shared with those around him.
